Background

Buddys is a real testimony to the many years of planning, hard work and commitment by so many people. The proposal for a centrally located multi-purpose community facility combined with a base for Worthing Mencap Society was mooted several years ago.

The committee made sure the project was fully in line with the objects of the Society, which are:

The relief of people with a learning disability, in particular by the provision of help and support for them and for their families, dependents and carers; and
To provide or assist in the provision of facilities for the recreation or other leisure time occupation for people who have need thereof by reason of learning disability, with the object of improving their lives.

Worthing Mencap purchased the shop premises at 121 South Farm Road, Worthing, with the money obtained from the sale of its previous headquarters. The new premises offered the size and flexibility of accommodation required for this project. The shop has a flat above which Mencap currently rents out for added income.

The multi-purpose centre combines office and meeting space for the Society with a high profile activity and project base for people with learning disabilities. It is a flagship venture by Worthing Mencap Society, providing an important practical facility and raising the profile of the charity.
